Is Online Notarization Legal in Ontario?

The short answer: Ontario does not currently permit fully remote notarization for all document types. However, remote commissioning of affidavits and statutory declarations is explicitly permitted under Ontario law — and in most cases, that is exactly what you need.

Ontario Regulation 431/20 (Remote Commissioning of Documents) permanently permits Commissioners for Taking Affidavits to administer oaths and take sworn documents via live two-way video. This applies to affidavits, statutory declarations, and most other sworn statements.

Five Simple Steps

The entire process takes about 15 minutes and is completed via secure live video — from anywhere in Ontario.

1

Upload your unsigned document

Upload your PDF. You'll answer a few intake questions about the document type and purpose. Documents must be unsigned — you sign during the session in front of your commissioner.

2

Book a 15-minute session

Browse available verified commissioners by language and availability. Choose a time slot — same-day options are often available. Pay securely via Stripe.

3

Verify your identity on camera

Your commissioner will ask to see your government-issued photo ID on camera — driver's licence, passport, or PR card. This is required by Ontario law and logged in the audit trail.

4

Sign your document during the session

Your commissioner administers the oath or affirmation, then witnesses you sign in real time. The signing timestamp is embedded in the document record.

5

Download your commissioned document

Your completed document — with the commissioner's electronic seal and jurat — is delivered by email within minutes. Ready to file, submit, or deliver.

Important Compliance Information

We want to be clear about what this service is — and what it is not.

What this service provides

This platform provides commissioning services for affidavits and statutory declarations in accordance with Ontario law, specifically the Commissioners for Taking Affidavits Act, R.S.O. 1990 and Ontario Regulation 431/20.

Commissioners are licensed Ontario lawyers, licensed paralegals, or appointed Commissioners for Taking Affidavits — all verified before conducting sessions.

What this service does not provide

This platform does not provide notarization services. It does not certify true copies of documents, provide apostilles, or authenticate documents for use abroad. Acceptance of remotely commissioned documents may vary depending on the receiving authority.

If your document requires a Notary Public (e.g., certified true copy for a foreign government), this service is not appropriate. Please confirm requirements with the receiving authority before booking.
